On Friday 20 May, the Governor of Victoria the Hon. Linda Dessau AM and Judge Anthony Howard hosted a cocktail reception at Government House in celebration of the centenary of the founding of Footscray Technical School and the 25th anniversary of Victoria University. Professor Peter Dawkins welcomed approximately 100 distinguished guests, including state and local MPs, distinguished international partners, student representatives and past Chancellor’s and Vice-Chancellor’s.

The Vice-Chancellor spoke of the privilege of being at the helm of the institution at such an exciting time, and of the positive impact that Victoria University has had and continues to have on the economy of the western region of Melbourne.

That sentiment is supported by a new report – an economic impact analysis authored by Professor John Madden from the internationally renowned Centre for Policy Studies (CoPS). This study undertakes a quantifiable assessment of the economic impact we make to our heartland, the West of Melbourne. This impact goes beyond the traditional measures usually associated with universities but instead demonstrates how we are fundamentally linked to the economic wellbeing of the region within which we are located. It tells a story that a strong and vibrant university means a strong and vibrant West of Melbourne.
